RL: Eu queria incentivar as
meteorológicas e quão longínqua é a região.
Interview : Rosaly Lopes and Tourism volcanoes
Volcanoes have always aroused a mix of curiosity , fascination and fear in people . Have been topics of Hollywood and appeared in adventures lyrics, and videos and pictures of these beauties always hit record views on the internet .
For those who do not want to stay only in the imagination and want to know a volcano up close , Rosaly Lopes , an expert on planetary volcanism Jet Propulsion Laboratory , NASA , Pasadena , California, gave an interview telling the reasons that led him to write the book Tourism adventure on volcanoes and offering tips for people wanting to visit these places . Check !
Comunitexto : When we started thinking about volcanoes for tourism?

CT : Why , despite the volcanoes are among the most photogenic places on Earth , only a few are visited by a large number of tourists ?
RL : For several factors . Rarely someone traveling with the main objective of visiting a volcano . Sometimes people do not know much about volcanoes , and think they are all dangerous . That's why I wrote the book to encourage trips to volcanoes .
CT : What volcanoes you recommend for " beginners " ?
RL : If you want to see activity , Kilauea ( Hawaii ) , Stromboli (Italy ) or Yasur (Vanuatu ) . If they are more interested in historical aspects , Vesuvius (Italy ) , the Mount St. Helens ( USA ) or Mount Pelée (Martinique ) .
CT : Who would be the person to accompany a tourist visiting a volcano that is in a more secluded place?
RL : A local guide . I suggest the person contact a local travel agency and ask for professional references that accompany tourists on visits to volcanoes . When I visited Erta Ale , Ethiopia , searched the internet travel agencies that could take us to the site. Also it is always good to get a recommendation from known or experts in universities and local volcanic observatories .
CT : What are the volcanoes closest to tourism in Brazil ?
RL : There are many in Chile and throughout the Andean region , which , in general, are not very easy to visit . The Galapagos islands are also volcanoes very interesting , but I think the volcanoes of the Caribbean have a certain degree of ease to know , are not far away , and have beautiful beaches nearby.
CT : What preparation a tourist who will visit a volcano do? What is essential to take to ensure a fun and safe ride ?
RL : A lot depends on the type of volcano, has to be considered the nature of the trip , the weather conditions and the remoteness is the region . Among the essentials are protective gear for the head and the gas masks . Anyone who wants to know more about specific items for each volcano can purchase the book on volcanoes Adventure tourism , which has all the tips .
CT : There are limitations for those with health problems ( eg , respiratory problems . ) ?
RL : It depends on the location. Some people (with asthma or other breathing difficulties ) have problems near active volcanoes , but there are many volcanoes that currently have little or no activity. If you need to go climbing , you must be in good physical shape . Those volcanoes quoted in question starters are relatively easy to visit.
CT : How many volcanoes have you ever visited ? What was the most impressive ?
RL : There were more than 58 in all continents except Antarctica . Most impressive was the Erta Ale , Ethiopia. It is a wonderful lake of lava, which was very difficult to control by visiting the site.
CT : Can you talk a bit more about that volcano in Antarctica ?
RL : In Antarctica there is an active volcano called Erebus very interesting . It is difficult to visit because you can not go as a tourist . You must have some project related to it to get there . I'm trying to start a project with the National Science Foundation ( NSF ) for this release.
CT : On some of these trips was an unforeseen ?
RL : Perhaps the scariest journey was that I did in the Afar region of Ethiopia, where the natives carry guns AK -47 .
CT : Tell some curious cases that happened to groups of exploration including the lady attended .
RL : One of the most interesting things these explorations is to discover sites that have a culture heavily influenced by volcanic activity . In Hawaiian mythology , for example , there are deities especially related to volcanoes . Elsewhere , as in New Zealand , it uses geothermal energy generated by the heat of volcanoes to produce electricity.
What do you have to say to those who are still unsure about doing this kind of trip?
RL : Write . Worth it, because the volcanoes are very beautiful and interesting .
